Dr. Oz White Mulberries a Superfood?

On today’s Dr. Oz Show, Dr. Oz talked about the newest superfood on his show. He believes this new superfood to be the best thing yet for lowering blood sugar and protecting your heart. Two things that are very important to everyone! So what is this superfood? It’s something called White Mulberry.

What is White Mulberry?

When you think of a food, many think of something you cook up, but this is actually a berry. While many fruits that you purchase can have 30-40 grams of sugar, dried mulberries 1/2 the amount of sugar found in things like raisins, so that’s something you don’t have to worry about…and better yet, a ton less sugar than things like bananas. The best thing about that is mulberries are actually still sweet! Even people in Dr. Oz’s audience couldn’t believe they were that sweet! This fruit is also a powerful antioxidant and contain things called phenols. Phenols help fight free radicals that can hurt your body. Studies show that mulberry helps eliminate these toxins from harming your heart, which is one of the reasons Dr. Oz feels it’s so important.

Also, this fruit just doesn’t contain sugar, it actually contains protein too! 4 grams per serving, which is pretty incredible being a berry! What’s a serving? Just 1/3 cup! Now let’s talk about fiber. In just 1/3 of a cup, dried mulberries give you 20% of your recommended fiber per day. That can help lower cholesterol and aid with digestion.

Are you watching your weight? Maybe you are on a diet? Well then you will be happy to know that mulberries contain no saturated fat either.

White Dried Mulberries and Sugar Control

So what’s exciting scientists the most is that this superfood might actually help prevent diabetes, which is a very bold claim. Within the mulberry leaf, there is a compound called 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ). Scientists think is can inhibit sugar so instead of it going to the bloodstream, it’s just excreted instead. This way it prevents spikes in blood sugar levels.


Dr. Oz recommends that you drink or eat it with meals so it can help balance blood sugar levels.
